What does the exception mean?
The general residence requirement is 8 years under the 2026 rules. For those married to or cohabiting with a Swedish citizen a shorter period applies, provided the marriage or cohabitation has lasted a certain time and you actually live together.
What needs to be proven?
Marriage certificate (or documentation of cohabitation), partner's Swedish citizenship and that you are registered at the same address. Other requirements – identity, support, language and conduct – still apply in full.
Common misunderstanding
Marriage to a Swedish citizen does not automatically give citizenship. It only affects the residence requirement – all other requirements must still be met.
