Swedish citizenship – complete guide
Everything you need to know about applying for Swedish citizenship: requirements, process, documents, and common mistakes. A practical guide from Migrationsguiden.
What does Swedish citizenship mean?
Swedish citizenship gives you the same rights and obligations as people born Swedish citizens, including the right to vote, the ability to work within the EU without special permits, and the right to a Swedish passport. Citizenship is granted by Migrationsverket after an individual assessment. The process differs from simply holding permanent residence – citizenship requires you to meet specific requirements for residence time, identity, self-support, language, and good conduct.
Who can apply?
Most adults who have lived legally in Sweden for long enough can apply. The requirements vary depending on citizenship, family situation, and whether you are a Nordic citizen. Children may in some cases receive citizenship together with a parent. You must be at least 18 to apply as an adult, have proven identity, and generally hold permanent residence.
Main requirements under rules effective from 2026
From 6 June 2026, updated requirements apply: normally eight years of residence, proven identity, self-support, approved knowledge of Swedish and knowledge of Swedish society, and good conduct. Certain groups have shorter residence requirements, for example Nordic citizens and people married to a Swedish citizen. Always check current exceptions with Migrationsverket.
How the application works
Applications are submitted to Migrationsverket via the e-service or form 316011. You attach supporting documents and pay the application fee. Migrationsverket may request additional documents, summon you for passport inspection or identity verification, and obtain information from other authorities such as Kronofogden and the Police. Processing times vary – often from a few months to several years.
What documents are needed?
Common documents include a passport or national ID card, proof of income and employment, evidence of Swedish and civics knowledge, a population registration certificate, and documentation of family circumstances. Exactly which documents are needed depends on your situation. A personal checklist based on your details makes it easier to gather the right material before you submit.
Processing time and decisions
The time from application to decision depends on whether the case is complete, how straightforward identity verification is, and how many cases Migrationsverket is handling. If the case has not been decided within six months, you can request a decision under Section 12 of the Administrative Procedure Act. Decisions are issued in writing – approval gives you proof of Swedish citizenship; a refusal can be appealed within three weeks.
Common mistakes
Many submit incomplete applications, forget to report stays abroad, or underestimate the significance of debts and previous offences. Others wait too long to gather language certificates or do not understand how residence time is calculated. Preparing carefully reduces the risk of requests for additional documents and extended processing.
Dual citizenship
Sweden allows dual citizenship, but your previous home country may have different rules. It may be wise to check with the embassy before you apply. Migrationsverket asks about other citizenships in the application.
