The basic requirements
To become a Swedish citizen through an application you generally need: proven identity, to be 18 or older, a permanent residence permit (or right of residence/residence card), fulfilled residence time, ability to support yourself, approved knowledge of Swedish and Swedish society, and a responsible way of life.
New rules from 2026
On 6 June 2026 the requirements were tightened. The residence period is generally 8 years, and requirements for self-sufficiency and tests in Swedish and civics have been introduced. Shorter residence time may apply for Nordic citizens and for those married to or cohabiting with a Swedish citizen.
