Request for additional documents
Migrationsverket needs more information or documents to decide your case. No decision has been made yet.
Why you received the letter
The case officer reviewed your application and found something missing – for example a certificate, a copy of your passport or a clarification about a stay abroad.
Migrationsverket sends request-for-documents letters routinely in almost all cases where the supporting material is not enough for a decision. It means your case is active, not refused.
The letter is sent when the authority needs more information before residence time, identity, support or language requirements can be fully assessed.
What the letter means
The letter means your application is not complete. Migrationsverket cannot decide the case until you submit what is missing.
It is not a negative decision in itself – but how and when you respond affects both processing time and the outcome.
Common requests concern identity documents, proof of support, language certificates or clarifications about stays abroad.
What you need to do
- 1Read the letter carefully and note exactly which documents are requested.
- 2Note the response deadline – it is always stated in the letter.
- 3Gather the documents. Send copies unless otherwise stated; never originals without being asked.
- 4Mark everything with your case number (reference) stated in the letter.
- 5Submit before the deadline – by post or via the e-service as instructed.
- 6Ask for an extension in good time if you cannot make it.
Common mistakes
- •Not responding at all – the case may then be decided on incomplete material and lead to refusal.
- •Sending originals when the letter does not explicitly request them.
- •Missing the deadline without requesting an extension in advance.
- •Submitting documents without the case number, which delays registration.
Common questions
What happens if I do not respond?
Migrationsverket will then decide the case on existing material, which often leads to refusal. Always respond – and explain if a document cannot be obtained.
Does a request for additional documents mean I will be refused?
No. A request for additional documents is a normal part of processing. A complete and clear response increases your chances of approval.
Does processing time get longer?
Yes, the case is effectively paused until your response is received. Respond as quickly and completely as possible.
