Beslut om medborgarskap (bifall)
Congratulations – you have been granted Swedish citizenship. The letter is your proof and applies from the date of the decision.
What the letter means
You are a Swedish citizen from the day the decision was made. The letter is called a certificate of Swedish citizenship – keep it safe.
Population registration with the Tax Agency is updated automatically, but it may take a week or so.
What you need to do
- 1Keep the decision/certificate in original – you may need to show it later.
- 2Book an appointment with the police for a Swedish passport and/or national ID card.
- 3Check whether your previous citizenship is affected – some countries do not allow dual citizenship.
- 4Watch for an invitation to a citizenship ceremony from your municipality (optional).
Common questions
When can I apply for a Swedish passport?
As soon as population registration is updated with your citizenship – usually within one to two weeks after the decision. Book an appointment with the police and bring valid ID.
Will I lose my previous citizenship?
Sweden allows dual citizenship, but your previous home country may have other rules. Check with that country's embassy.
