MMigrationsguidenClarity and structure for your application

Passvisning (passkontroll)

You must present your passport or other identity document in original so Migrationsverket can verify identity and travels.

What the letter means

Migrationsverket wants to examine your identity document in original – check that it is genuine, belongs to you and review entry and exit stamps.

The stamps are used among other things to verify your residence time and stays abroad. It is a routine step in many cases.

What you need to do

  1. 1Bring the passport in original – and any older or expired passports if you still have them.
  2. 2Bring the summons/letter and your residence permit card if you have one.
  3. 3If you previously submitted your passport to Migrationsverket: bring the receipt.
  4. 4Prepare for questions about longer stays abroad – compare your own notes with the stamps.

Common questions

My passport has expired – what do I do?

Bring the expired passport and explain the situation. Contact Migrationsverket in advance – in some cases you need to renew the passport at your home country's embassy first.

Does Migrationsverket keep my passport?

Sometimes the passport is kept during an inspection period and you receive a receipt. If you need to travel you can request temporary release of the passport.
