How are debts assessed?

Migrationsverket automatically retrieves information from the Enforcement Authority. Active debts, especially to the public sector (taxes, fines, maintenance), weigh more heavily than old, settled debts. Payment remarks in themselves are not decisive – the actual debt situation is assessed.

What can I do?

Pay off your debts if possible and keep receipts and decisions. After debts are paid a certain period of responsible conduct is usually required before citizenship can be granted. Always state debts honestly in the application – incorrect information can lead to refusal and in the worst case revocation.
