Step by step
1) The case is registered and you receive a case number – save it. 2) Migrationsverket retrieves information from among others the Tax Agency, Police and Enforcement Authority. 3) If something is missing you receive a request for additional documents. 4) You are often summoned to show your identity document in original. 5) A decision is made and sent to you.
While waiting
You can live as usual: work, travel and move. Always report address changes so letters reach you. Your residence permit is not affected while the application is processed.
If it takes a long time
After six months you can in writing request that the case be decided (Section 12 of the Administrative Procedure Act). Migrationsverket must then decide the case or reject the request within four weeks.

This is common. Check case status via Migrationsverket's e-service with your case number. No news usually means the case is waiting in the queue.
You are moving during processing
Report the move to the Tax Agency and notify Migrationsverket. Letters that do not reach you can lead to the case being decided without your responses.
