How long does it take to get Swedish citizenship?
Processing time at Migrationsverket varies greatly – from a few months to several years. Complete applications with clear supporting documents are usually decided faster.
What affects processing time?
The time depends among other things on whether your identity is easy to prove, whether the application is complete from the start, whether Migrationsverket needs information from other authorities, and how many cases are waiting. Incomplete applications often lead to requests for additional documents, which considerably extends the time.
Can I speed up my case?
If your case has not been decided within six months you can submit a request for a decision under Section 12 of the Administrative Procedure Act. Migrationsverket must then either decide the case or reject your request within four weeks.
Tips
The best way to shorten the time is to submit a complete application from the start – correct information and all documents. You can use our guide to create a personal summary and document checklist based on your answers.
Always check current rules with Migrationsverket as rules may change.
