Do you have to take a civics test for citizenship?
Yes, the rules that apply from 2026 include a requirement for knowledge of Swedish society. The requirement is tested in the citizenship test organised by UHR.
What is tested?
The civics test covers basic knowledge of how Swedish society works: democracy, rights and obligations, working life, everyday life and Swedish history at an overview level.
How do I prepare?
UHR provides study material for the test. The book 'Om Sverige' and civic orientation offered by municipalities are also good preparation.
Exemptions
As with the language requirement, exemptions may apply for certain groups, for example due to age or disability. See Migrationsverket's website for current rules.
Always check current rules with Migrationsverket as rules may change.
