Do you have to take a language test for citizenship?
Yes, from 2026 approved knowledge of Swedish is required. The requirement can be met through the citizenship test or through approved grades, for example SFI course D, compulsory school or upper secondary school.
What knowledge is required?
You need to show knowledge of Swedish at a basic level. The new citizenship test, organised by UHR from August 2026, tests both Swedish and knowledge of Swedish society.
Alternatives to the test
You can instead prove your knowledge with a pass grade from SFI (course C/D), a pass grade in Swedish or Swedish as a second language from compulsory or upper secondary school, or a passed Tisus test.
Exemptions
Certain groups may be exempt from the requirements, for example due to advanced age or permanent disability. Check current exemption rules with Migrationsverket.
Always check current rules with Migrationsverket as rules may change.
