What happens if I have debts when applying for citizenship?
Debts with the Swedish Enforcement Authority can affect the assessment of your way of life and ability to support yourself. Paid debts normally do not prevent citizenship, but active debts can lead to refusal or a requirement for a debt-free period.
How are debts assessed?
Migrationsverket automatically retrieves information from the Enforcement Authority. Active debts, especially to the public sector (taxes, fines, maintenance), weigh more heavily than old, settled debts. Payment remarks in themselves are not decisive – the actual debt situation is assessed.
What can I do?
Pay off your debts if possible and keep receipts and decisions. After debts are paid a certain period of responsible conduct is usually required before citizenship can be granted. Always state debts honestly in the application – incorrect information can lead to refusal and in the worst case revocation.
Always check current rules with Migrationsverket as rules may change.
