What happens after a citizenship decision?
If granted you become a Swedish citizen on the same day the decision is made. You can then apply for a Swedish passport and ID card. If refused you can appeal to the Migration Court within three weeks.
If you are granted citizenship
You receive a decision (certificate of Swedish citizenship) by post. Population registration is updated automatically. You can book an appointment with the police for a Swedish passport and national ID card. Many municipalities also invite new citizens to a citizenship ceremony.
If you are refused
The refusal decision can be appealed to the Migration Court within three weeks from when you received the decision. You can also choose to apply again later when you meet the requirements – for example after longer residence time or after debts are settled.
Always check current rules with Migrationsverket as rules may change.
