Residence time for Swedish citizenship
Explanation of residence time: how it is calculated, what breaks the period, and exceptions for Nordic citizens and family. Guidance ahead of a citizenship application.
Definition of residence time
Residence time is the period you have lived legally in Sweden with the intention of staying. It is one of the most important requirements for citizenship. The period should be continuous, and you should have held a residence permit or another basis for stay throughout.
Eight years – the main rule from 2026
Under the rules that took effect on 6 June 2026, eight years of residence is normally required for citizenship. Previously, five years applied for many groups. Transitional rules may apply for people who applied before the new rules entered into force – check with Migrationsverket.
When does residence time begin?
Residence time is normally counted from the day you received your residence permit and settled, or from arrival if the permit was granted retrospectively. Dates in the application should match your residence permit, population registration, and passport stamps.
Stays abroad
Short trips such as holidays rarely affect residence time. Longer stays abroad – especially more than six weeks per calendar year – should be stated in the application and may be deducted. Longer periods abroad can break continuous residence entirely.
Shorter residence time for certain groups
Nordic citizens may have shorter requirements. People married to, in a registered partnership with, or cohabiting with a Swedish citizen may also have shorter residence time if the relationship meets Migrationsverket's requirements. Documentation of the relationship is important.
Residence time and passport inspection
Migrationsverket reviews passport stamps to verify when you were in Sweden and abroad. Prepare your own list of longer trips and cross-check it against your passport before passport inspection or application.
Common mistakes
Failing to report stays abroad, counting time before a residence permit, or assuming time on a temporary permit always counts. Incorrect residence calculations are a common reason for refusal.

Does time on a temporary residence permit count?
It depends on the permit type and period. As a rule, time is counted from when you received permission to live here long term.
Does a long holiday affect residence time?
Short holidays normally do not. Longer stays should be reported and may affect the assessment.
Do the same rules apply to Nordic citizens?
Nordic citizens often have shorter residence requirements. See Migrationsverket's current rules.
