Identity and the citizenship application

How to prove your identity ahead of citizenship: passport, national ID, identity verification, and common problems – guidance from Migrationsguiden.

Why identity is central

Proven identity is a core requirement. Migrationsverket must be able to establish who you are, where you were born, and which citizenship you hold. Without reliable identity documents, citizenship cannot be granted.

Accepted documents

Passports and national ID cards in original form are most common. The document should be valid or accepted according to Migrationsverket's practice. Copies are rarely sufficient for identity verification – you are often summoned for passport inspection.

Identity verification and investigation

If current documents are not enough, Migrationsverket may initiate an identity investigation. You may be asked to provide further evidence: birth certificates, school records, driving licences, or an explanation of why certain documents are missing.

Low evidential value

Documents from certain countries are assessed as having low evidential value if they are not based on reliable identification. A more extensive investigation is then required. Long residence in Sweden can in some cases compensate.

Passport inspection

At passport inspection, Migrationsverket examines the passport in original form, including expired passports and stamps. The stamps are used to verify travel and residence time. Read more on our page about passport inspection.

Common mistakes

Sending only copies, not bringing old passports, or avoiding identity questions. Honesty and complete documentation are essential.

If you do not have a passport

Contact your home country's embassy. If a passport cannot be obtained, document why in writing and gather other evidence. Migrationsverket makes an overall assessment.
